Migraines- an easy trick to give you INSTANT relief

Migraines SUCK, but you don't need me to tell you that. There's something about having your head in agony that renders me useless. There are many reasons why people suffer from migraines, however there is research into the effects of the seretonin drop in a migraine state. Causes, or triggers can be a chemical reaction to things ingested, hormonal imbalances, sleep disturbances, a reaction to environmental factors and STRESS to name a few.

Thankfully, there is something you can do to help stave off the effects, at least for a little while until we can get home and into the shower or bed, curtains drawn and feeling sorry for ourselves, waiting for the storm to pass.

I guess I am lucky that I learnt this when I was training, many many moons ago, that has allowed me to continue to drive safely home, finish my shift, make sure the kids safe and happy before it gets too bad to think or do anything practical. It has even stopped a migraine in its tracks a few times.

Its all about the occipital ridge baby!

Its at the back of your head, normally where your hairline finishes.

Here is where the muscles of your neck meet your head, and where they come very tight and can pull on the bones of your skull indicating headaches and migraines.

SO the trick is....

When you feel a headache or migraine starting, (that cloudy feeling) you get your fingertips or thumbs and you run them along your occipital ridge and feel for the tender and sore spots.

Once you find those sore points, you push on them and hold for 10-15 seconds to a pain level you can comfortably tolerate. Repeat a few times until there is a lightening and lessening of pain.

This will encourage the muscles to release their tension and stop pulling on the bones of your skull to give you some relief. An icepack on that ridge can also help settle everything down, if cold is your thing.

Another trick that can also help is making time in your monthly schedule for a massage.

Since some of the causes of migraines are stress and seretonin dipping, we can deduce that by partaking in therapy that directly deals with eliminating stress and increases your seretonin levels would help give you control over your migraines in the hope to lessen their effect and extend the periods of time without them.

I have found that if I don't get my regular massage sessions that I am more sensitive to migraines and they are often more intense and frequent, than when I am having regular maintenance sessions.

Massage releases seretonin and oxytocin in the brain and depletes cortisol levels (stress hormone). It also improves circulations and gives rest to exhausted minds and bodies. Why wouldn't you have a massage?

Take back control and kick migraines to the kerb. Book your massage here
